Veterans Go From Strength To Strength

The Club’s over 35s team finished off their season with both the men and women gaining excellent third place finishes on Sunday, in the Southern Counties Veterans League final.

The men and women contested separate competitions, against six other clubs in their respective finals, with Dartford being the other to have teams in both competitions.

Tonbridge only entered teams in the league at the start of the 2016 season, commencing in Kent Division Two. Since then it’s been an upward trajectory, as promotion to the top, Kent Division One was gained last year. Then with gathering numbers and enthusiasm the end of season final places were achieved, after taking runners-up spots in the leagues.

The final consisted of a full program of track and field events with over 35, over 50 and over 60 age groups. Tonbridge athletes filled all ninety of the events available, maximizing their points potential.

The women’s team finished third behind Epsom and Dartford and secured four individual victories on the day. Maria Heslop completed an 800m (2.33.91) and 3000m (10.49.77) double, the latter breaking the club’s over 45 age record. Emma Wood won the over 45, 200 metres in an impressive 27.54, whilst Diane Bradley secured maximum 3000m walk points with 11.59.5.

There were plenty of second place performances on the men’s side, but with no individual wins. However, Tonbridge came to the fore in the relays, winning all four events. The men’s 4x100m sprint team ran 48.56, which is the fastest time by a veterans club team, in the UK this year. The women’s sprint relay team also won in 56.08.
