14 October 2007: IAU 50k Trophy Final - Palermo, Sicily

Julian Rendall competed for England in the IAU 50KM Trophy Final in Palermo, Sicily.

Qualification for the final is dependant on gaining the requisite qualification time in one of the previous ten selection races held in various countries around the world. Julian qualified by running in the Boddington 50km AAA of England Championships held near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire last August.

The Palermo race comprised of a three lap course in and around the historic town of Palermo. Despite the warm conditions the initial pace set by the lead athletes was very quick and Julian found himself in 5th place during the early stages of the race. As the race progressed a number of the leading athletes retired or slowed significantly on the uphill sections allowing Julian to move through the field.

He eventually finished in second position behind a Belgian athlete in a time of 3.09.39, ranking him seventh in the world over this distance.
